What To Expect At Your In-Home Shutter Consultation

Lisa Renee Nieberding

As you begin the window treatment buying process, some companies, like Sunburst, send out a rep for an in-home consultation. By taking products to your home, we can present how various window coverings would look with your decor. You’ll discover how natural it is to find the perfect treatments when you leave the sterile showroom.

But what actually goes on during an in-home consultation? And how can showing you different products at your home help you better choose the perfect window treatment? Sunburst prides itself on these in-home consultations, and here’s what you will see at your visit.

Walking Through A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

Start by scheduling an appointment by calling your local representative. If you already know what window covering you want, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make sure to bring you a variety of options for your preferred treatment. We will also offer additional treatments, so you can know that your room matches your vision.

When we arrive, we’ll sit down and discuss what you want in a window treatment. We’ll cover issues like your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency preferences, and we’ll ask about hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your representative will also want to know how your windows are used and what style you are trying to acheive. We want to execute your final vision, so the more you can explain, the better.

We might show you many different samples to discover which treatments match your interior design and enhance your windows. Most clients need to explore a few different treatments, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or choosing the perfect stain to match your color scheme. We’ll also show you all the options available for the shutter, shade, or blind, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

After you decide on a treatment, we’ll get the exact measurements of your windows. We generally measure the windows in each room—even if you only want to buy window treatments for some of your windows. We get multiple measurements because a lot of our customers ask to be able to order additional shutters or blinds without another consultation. Finally, we will thoroughly explain the detailed, written quote, so there are no phantom numbers on your invoice.

Red Flags For A Poor In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are sure that Sunburst will give you an easy and enjoyable in-home consultation, there are some red flags you should never see from any window treatment rep. It should go without saying, the quality of your sales representative usually equals the quality of the window treatments.

Above all else, your salesperson should be careful and professional. The rep should show up as scheduled, clean and presentable, and offer to protect your floors with shoe booties. Your rep should always give you product and company pamphlets and pricing information.

When discussing pricing, you should always get a complete written quote. Don’t accept a vague guess, scribbled on a scrap piece of paper or the back of a business card. And always reject pricing estimates before they take any window measurements. You want to be able to follow how much you should pay and why. Don’t forget to search for references and online reviews.
